About the Amster Sisters

Susan Amster BFA ‘62; MFA ‘68 (E Texas) & PhD ‘72 is a lifelong advocate for the integration of art into everyday life. She began her formal training as a child and went on to earn a BS and MS in Painting & Drawing, followed by a Doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction. Her career includes serving as Chair of the Art Department at Illinois State University, participating in the NEH Humanities Institute, and contributing to arts education nationally. Her work reflects a passion for using art to promote critical thinking, creativity, and global understanding.

Stephanie Amster, BFA ‘62 & MFA ‘68 was equally accomplished, with a celebrated career in both studio art and arts education. She developed innovative computer graphics programs at institutions such as the University of Texas and Illinois State University. She exhibited in major venues including the Lee Nordness Gallery in New York, founded a study-abroad program in Florence, Italy, and directed the Renaissance Art Festival in Illinois for nearly two decades. Her contributions were recognized with numerous awards and a scholarship in her name at Illinois State University.
